The Case for Early Marriage: Lessons from History and Inspiration

Omoni Oboli's son, at just 22, has already embraced marriage, fatherhood, and responsibility. By the time he turns 40, he’ll likely have a child in university, be near retirement, and enjoying the fruits of his early decisions. This stands in contrast to many 40-year-old single men in Nigeria who are yet to experience significant life milestones such as building a family or owning a car. Early marriage offers numerous advantages and can set a solid foundation for a fulfilling life.

There are inspiring examples that highlight the value of early commitment. Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, affectionately called "Omo Sexy," married her husband, Captain Matthew Ekeinde, at the age of 18. Together, they grew as a team—building a life full of love, success, and mutual support. Their story demonstrates how early marriage can lead to shared growth and accomplishment.

Similarly, Mary, the mother of Jesus, married Joseph early in life. Their partnership reflects timeless values of love, resilience, and faith. With Joseph's steadfast support, Mary played a monumental role in shaping history and exemplifying the strength of an early and committed union.

Here are five compelling reasons why marrying early can be beneficial, especially for women:

  1. Starting Life Earlier: Early marriage gives individuals the opportunity to set life goals in motion sooner—whether it’s raising a family, building a home, or pursuing dreams.
  2. Mutual Growth and Support: A strong partnership fosters shared goals and mutual support, creating a foundation where both individuals thrive together.
  3. Mastering Skills and Independence: Women can focus on learning skills, establishing careers, and contributing financially to the household, becoming coproviders like the Proverbs 31 woman.
  4. Cultural and Personal Fulfillment: Early marriage aligns with values of family and community while offering personal fulfillment through shared milestones.
  5. Long-Term Benefits: Starting a family early allows individuals to enjoy the milestones of their children while they are still energetic and, later, focus on personal growth and fulfillment in retirement.

It is important to address the misconception that men reject women who support them. On the contrary, a woman who brings strength, intelligence, and resourcefulness to a partnership is often appreciated and respected. Marriage thrives on teamwork, and women who actively contribute to their family’s success—emotionally, financially, or otherwise—are invaluable in building a happy and stable home.

Unfortunately, societal poverty, cultural shifts, and infrastructural barriers in Nigeria have caused significant delays in the growth processes for many young people. While youths in other parts of the world begin living independent lives at 18 and consider starting families in their early twenties, young Nigerians often face obstacles that keep them dependent and stalled.

This calls for a change in mindset—embracing early preparation for life, marriage, and career. By cultivating skills early, stepping into partnerships that encourage mutual growth, and being proactive, individuals can break free from societal delays and achieve fulfilling, impactful lives. What do you think about this perspective?
